Browser extension for Chrome & Edge

The BLBOL download manager extension for Chrome and Edge

For Chrome, Edge and every Chromium browser, including Brave, Vivaldi and Opera. It hands downloads to BLBOL the moment they start, adds “Download with BLBOL” to the right-click menu, and finds the video and audio playing on the page.

What it does

A small extension, a big shortcut

The extension only talks to the BLBOL app on your own PC. It does not send anything to us or to anyone else.

Captures downloads
Files you download in the browser are handed to BLBOL at full speed. Choose a minimum size and file types, or exclude sites.
Download with BLBOL
Right-click any link, a selection of links or a whole page to send it to BLBOL. Lists of links open in the Link Grabber.
Media on this page
The toolbar popup lists the video and audio it finds (MP4, WebM and MP3 files, HLS and DASH streams), with their sizes when the site provides them.
Your sign-in, when needed
For login-only videos, the extension passes that site's cookies to BLBOL on your PC, only for that download.
Pause capture
One switch in the popup stops capturing until you turn it back on.
Light and fast
It does not slow pages down, and it follows your browser's light or dark mode.

Install the bundled extension

Install in developer mode, step by step

Until the store listings are live, you can install the extension that comes with BLBOL. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera.

  1. Download and unzip

Download blbol-extension.zip and extract it to a folder you will keep, such as Documents\BLBOL Extension. The browser loads the extension from that folder, so don't delete it.

  2. Open the extensions page

Type chrome://extensions in the address bar and press Enter. In Edge use edge://extensions, in Opera opera://extensions.

  3. Turn on Developer mode

Switch on Developer mode. In Chrome it is at the top right; in Edge it is in the left-hand panel.

  4. Load the folder

Click Load unpacked and select the folder that contains manifest.json.

  5. Pin it and check the connection

Pin BLBOL from the puzzle-piece menu. With the BLBOL app running, the popup shows Connected.

Updating: when a new version is released, extract the new zip into the same folder and press the reload button on the BLBOL card on the extensions page. The store version, once available, updates by itself.

Permissions

Every permission, explained

Your browser lists these when you install the extension. Here is exactly what each one is for.

PermissionWhy BLBOL needs it
downloadsTo hand a download to BLBOL instead of the browser, and to leave the files you choose not to capture with the browser.
nativeMessagingTo talk to the BLBOL app on your PC. This is the only place the extension sends data.
webRequestTo notice video and audio streams (MP4, HLS, DASH) while a page plays them. It only observes; it never blocks or changes requests.
cookiesTo pass a site's sign-in cookies to BLBOL when you download a login-only video from that site.
contextMenusTo add “Download with BLBOL” to the right-click menu.
scriptingTo collect the links on a page when you choose “Download all links with BLBOL”.
storageTo remember your extension settings, such as whether capture is on.
notificationsTo tell you when the BLBOL app is not running or cannot be reached.
<all_urls>Access to all sites. Downloads and videos can come from any site, so the extension needs to see them wherever they start.
The extension collects no analytics and sends nothing over the internet. Data goes only to the BLBOL app on the same computer. Read the extension privacy policy.

FAQ

Extension questions

The popup says BLBOL is not connected. What should I do?

Make sure the BLBOL app is installed and running, then reload the extension. The installer connects BLBOL to your browsers, so if you added the extension before installing the app, restart the browser once. If you moved the extension folder, load it again from its new location.

Do I need the extension?

No. BLBOL works on its own: copy a link and press Ins. The extension adds automatic capture, the right-click menu and video detection.

Does it work in Firefox?

Not yet. The extension supports Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera and other Chromium browsers.

Why does my browser mention developer mode?

Browsers can remind you that an extension was loaded from a folder in developer mode. That is expected for the bundled extension. Once the store version is available you can switch to it; it leaves out the Download button on YouTube's player, which only the bundled extension has.

Does the extension see my browsing?

It looks at downloads and media on pages so it can offer them to BLBOL, and it shares that information only with the app on your PC. Nothing is sent to BLBOL's servers or to any third party.
